Sincona sale 66, lot 1200

This specimen was lot 1200 in Sincona sale 66 (Zurich, October 2020), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$527 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, Herzogtum | misc. Friedrich I. 1675-1691. 2/3 Taler 1679. Vorzüglich. Übliche kleine Schrötlingsfehler. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick I, 1675-91, two-thirds thaler of 1679. Extremely fine, Usual small planchet flaws.)"

Altho the auctioneers have catalogued this as an issue of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, the duke did not receive Altenburg until the division of 1680, being merely duke of Saxe-Gotha before. Many varieties exist for this date, which was restruck for several years.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 18.95 g.

Catalog reference: KM 95, Kozinowski/Otto/Ruß 495 c, Dav-855.
