Sincona sale 20, lot 2769

This specimen was lot 2769 in Sincona sale 20 (Zurich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 150 (about US$188 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "5 Francs AN 13 (1804-05). Perpignan. Fast sehr schön-sehr schön." This issue, from the Perpignan mint, is a somewhat scarce date of a type struck An 13-14 (1804-06). This type succeeded the "PREMIER CONSUL" obverse struck AN XI-12. A complete set of this type comprises 27 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The entire production run totaled about ten million pieces. All silver five francs were officially recalled in 1928 but ceased to circulate after World War I. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.

Recorded mintage: 244,795.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Nicolas-Guy-Antoine Brenet and Jean-Pierre Droz. This specimen is 24.66 g.

Catalog reference: F.303/13, Dav-83; Gad-580, KM-662.10.
