UBS sale 83, lot 2764

Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Geneva mint (mint mark "G") in 1804. It is a very rare date and was lot 2764 in UBS sale 83 (Zurich, September 2009). The Geneva mint struck French coins 1800-05 only, after which it resumed striking Swiss designs. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fourth, struck 1804-05 with a complete set of this type comprising 27 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. This date is priced[1] about twenty-five times the Paris mint issue.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Mintage: 6,493[1], 6,487[2].

Catalog reference: Dav-83; F.303/5, KM 662.5.
