Sincona sale 51, lot 3521

This specimen was lot 3521 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,930 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815. 5 Francs 1814 T, Nantes. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (France, first empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, five francs of 1814, Nantes mint. Very rare, Very fine.)"

This rare date is priced[2] 27 times the Paris mint issue for 1814. The Nantes mint also struck five francs with the bust of Louis XVIII; these are also rare.

Recorded mintage: 8,721 plus 5,217 of Louis XVIII.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz AGW, this specimen 24.76 g.

Catalog reference: F.307/85, Gadoury 584. Dav-85.
