This bronze five centavos is the last date of a type struck 1942-55. Minting authorities had been eager to retire the bronze coin for some time and attempted to introduce a copper-nickel five centavos (KM 425) in 1950 which was not a success. Eventually this type was retired in favor of a smaller brass coin (KM 426). The portrait is of Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, a heroine of the War of Independence.

Recorded mintage: 31,114,000 (plus 12,136,000 of KM-426).

Specification: 6.5 g, bronze, 25.5 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM-424.
