Mexico 1954 5 centavos
The first specimen was lot 35135 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $159. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1954-Mo. ANACS MS-63. No dot." The second specimen was lot 72774 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1954-Mo. NGC MS-64 BN. With dot. Nice strike, traces of mint luster." This brass five centavos of 1954-69 superseded the larger bronze five centavos (KM 424) of 1942-55. Minting authorities had been eager to retire the bronze coin for some time and attempted to introduce a copper-nickel five centavos (KM 425) in 1950 which was not a success. The "with dot" variety is slightly scarcer than the "no dot" but neither are common. Later dates are readily available.
Recorded mintage: 58,680,000 (including KM-424).
Specification: brass.
Catalog reference: KM-426.
