Mexico 1955-Mo 20 centavos KM-439
The first specimen was lot 72788 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $45. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 20 Centavos, 1955-Mo. PCGS MS-65 RB Secure Holder. Small eagle reverse. Sharply struck with attractive dark red surfaces." The second specimen was lot 74870 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 20 Centavos, 1955-Mo. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-66 Red. This amazing Gem offers endless mint red and a swirling display of luster on the sharply struck surfaces." This handsome coin, a sterling tribute to the skill of Mexican coin engravers, was struck in Mexico City 1943-74 and constitutes one of the longer series in twentieth century Mexico. The eagle was redesigned twice, in 1955 (KM 440) and 1971 (KM 441). Sadly, by the end of its run inflation had so eroded its value that it was worth more in copper than its face value and people were smuggling them into the U.S. to be sold as scrap metal. This date is low mintage (most of the year's production is KM 440) and is scarce but not rare.
Recorded mintage: 16,950,000 (including KM-440).
Specification: 10 g, bronze, 28.5 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM 439.
