Sincona sale 84, lot 194

This specimen was lot 194 in Sincona sale 84 (Zurich, October 2023), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$404 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"RUSSIA Russian Empire and Federation, 5 Kopecks 1801, Mints in St. Petersburg, SM AI. Rare. 0.5 rouble according to Petrov. Very fine-extremely fine."

This type was struck 1798, 1801 only. The emperor Paul terminated the copper five and ten kopeks struck in large numbers during Catherine's reign and switched the denominations back to silver. The first issue (KM C96.1) was at the old weight but this issue was reduced to 1.04 g.
