Russia 1802-KM 5 kopeks
This specimen was lot 203 in Sincona sale 84 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$471 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUSSIA Russian Empire and Federation, 5 Kopecks 1802, Suzun Mint, KM. Rare. 2 roubles according to Petrov. 1 rouble according to Ilyin. Extremely fine-uncirculated. Extraordinary condition."
On the death of Catherine the Great in 1796, her successor terminated the production of the copper five and ten kopeks and ordered that they be replaced with silver. This was done but upon his murder in 1801, the regime reverted back to copper. This type was struck 1802-10. It is not rare but scarce in choice condition.
Recorded mintage: 4,000,000.
Specification: copper, this specimen 58.15 g.
