Sincona sale 84, lot 193

This specimen was lot 193 in Sincona sale 84 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,481 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSIA Russian Empire and Federation, Poltina 1801, Mints in Petersburg, SM AI. 3 roubles according to Petrov. 3 roubles according to Ilyin. Very fine. Nicely toned. From auction World Wide Coins of California 19, Santa Rosa, June 1991, lot 605."

This poltina or half ruble was struck in this style 1798-1801. Like the other poltinas of the eighteenth century, it is scarce. Three assayers are recorded for 1801. The similar ruble (Dav-278) is rather more available.

Recorded mintage: 172,000 (assayers OM, АИ, ФА together).

Specification: 10.37 g, 0.868 fine silver, this specimen 10.31 g.
