The specimen shown is a type struck in Chile 1971-72 only. It was the only issue of this subdivision of the escudo and is worthless in all grades. José Manuel Balmaceda (1840-91, president of Chile 1886-91) appears on the obverse. The escudo superseded the peso in 1960, with one escudo = 1000 pesos.
Recorded mintage: 89,200,000.
Specification: 3.05 g, aluminum-bronze, 19.97 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 195.
