This specimen was lot 20700 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,437.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IV gold 8 Escudos 1790-SF Popayán, AU50 NGC, light original toning, a nicely struck example. Bust of Carlos III with title as CAROL IV. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1789-91. Assayer SF is noted for 1776-92. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
