Sincona sale 43, lot 3013

This specimen was lot 3013 in Sincona sale 43 (Zurich, October 2017), where it sold for 180 CHF (aboout US$215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Friedrich V. von der Pfalz (Winterkönig), 1619-1622 Kipper-12 Kreuzer 1621. Heidelberg. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. (kingdom of Bohemia, Frederick V of the Palatinate, the "Winter King", 1619-22, kipper twelver kreuzerof 1621, Heidelberg mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Minor planchet defect.)"

Altho nominally a one-sixth thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with 48, 15, 24, 30, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. The auction cataloguers filed this under Bohemia but the SCWC lists this under Pfalz as that it where it was made. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 3.08 g.

Catalog reference: Herinek 49, KM 22.
