The first specimen was lot 2643 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 12 € (about US$16 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1663. Felipe IV. Trujillo. M. 8 maravedís. MBC [very fine]." The second specimen was lot 2644 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 18 € (about US$23 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1664. Felipe IV. Trujillo. M. 8 maravedís. Punto entre DG. La M acuñada encima de una R. Ligeramente descentrada. Escasa. MBC+ [dot between DG, slightly off center, scarce, choice very fine]." In addition to the reales and escudos familiar to collectors of Spanish American coins, a whole series of copper coins circulated in metropolitan Spain which never made it across the Atlantic despite numerous attempts by colonial authorities to do so. These copper coins appeared in denominations of half, one, two, four, eight and sixteen maravedis (34 maravedis = one real in silver). The eight maravedis which appears here was struck only briefly (1661-64) and then abandoned, most likely due to rejection by the populace.
