This specimen was lot 33032 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. Papal States. Pius IX gold 10 Lire Anno XXI (1867)-R MS63 NGC, Rome mint. Displaying flashy, near-Prooflike luster, with an attractive layer of frost over the devices." This type, struck 1867-70 at Rome, is not listed as rare but much scarcer than the 20 lire. Each date has a slightly different bust. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.
Recorded mintage: 8,580 of year XXI plus 9,176 of year XXII.
Specification: 3.23 g, 0.900 fine gold, .0933 troy oz AGW.
