Bolivia 1773-PTS JR real

from the Stack's Bowers 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73121

This specimen was lot 73121 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Real, 1773-PTS JR. Potosi Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-55. A decently struck Real with a bit of softness in the centers but bold peripheral detail. Abundant luster remains in the fields and the toning is a pleasing mix of gray and faint magenta." This is an example of a type struck 1773-89 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1791 by the bust of Charles IV. Harris^[2] notes that Potosi one reales of Charles III are nearly tied with Mexico City as the commonest mint. Assayer JR is recorded for 1767-76.
