This specimen was lot 99215 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV gold Louis d'Or 1735-S AU Details (Stained) NGC, Reims mint. Louis d'Or aux lunettes. A great rarity that was apparently struck from somewhat rusted dies, with only one other having come to light in the course of our research--the Bearn specimen (MS63), which brought $2350 in our January 2017 auction #3051. Assigned the highest rating by Les monnaies des quatre Rois Louis, this piece is quite pleasing for the assigned grade, and seems to the present cataloger to be more accurately saltwater damaged than stained." This louis d'or aux lunettes is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime altho this is one of many rare dates.
Recorded mintage: 6,553.
Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
