from Stack's Bowers 2016 ANA sale, lot 22290

This specimen was lot 22290 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $152.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1735-L. Bayonne Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC AU-55. Some adjustment marks. Even and pleasing stony grey tone." The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV; Bayonne struck the type every year except 1729 and many dates are common. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's. The mint closed in the nineteenth century.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
