This specimen was lot 30778 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVI gold 2 Louis d'or 1787-I AU Details (Scratch) PCGS, Limoges mint. Lightly circulated with attractive reddish tone over the surfaces. A thin scratch behind Louis XVI's bust determines the 'details' grade." This is a somewhat better double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Limoges mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor French gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.
