Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features a bust of Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons. This type was struck 1972 and 1976-81 at the Franklin mint. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
Recorded mintage: 5,000 specimens for sets plus 26,000 proofs.
Specification: 1.45 g, aluminum, 23.25 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 6.
