Lesotho, formerly the British protectorate of Basutoland, was formed to curb the encroachment of white settlers on the lands of the Basuto. Entirely surrounded by South Africa and completely dependent on it economically, Lesotho struggled with the corrosive effect of apartheid. The end of the supremacist regime has not brought prosperity to Lesotho. This type was struck for the kingdom of Lesotho 1979-81, 1983, 1985 and 1989. After Moshoeshoe's death in 1990, his portrait was dropped in favor of the national arms (KM 54). The plural of sente is lisente. The plural of loti is maloti. Lesotho was omitted from the 42nd edition of the SCWC; the data was taken from the 35th edition.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 1.5 g, nickel brass, 16.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 16.
