Lesotho 1969 4 maloti
This specimen was lot 43419 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "LESOTHO. 4 Maloti, 1969. PCGS PROOF-67 DEEP CAMEO Gold Shield. Struck to commemorate the F.A.O. series with a mintage of only 3,000 pieces. Possessing extreme cameo contrast on both sides with a few wispy hairlines in the fields that determine the grade." The F.A.O. series was intended for circulating coinage; we don't know why gold was selected for this issue. This commemorative was accompanied by gold one loti, two maloti, ten maloti and 20 maloti. The mintage and specification are taken from the 35th edition of the SCWC; for some reason, the current edition omits Lesotho entirely.
Recorded mintage: 3,000.
Specification: 15.97 g, 0.917 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-10; KM-10.
