This specimen was lot 73554 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "LESOTHO. 2 Lisente, 1985. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. Fully radiant and resplendent, this superb Gem offers cartwheel brilliance and alluring eye appeal, all while being exceeded in the PCGS census by just one example. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Lesotho, formerly the British protectorate of Basutoland, was formed to curb the encroachment of white settlers on the lands of the Basuto. Entirely surrounded by South Africa and completely dependent on it economically, Lesotho struggled with the corrosive effect of apartheid. The end of the supremacist regime has not brought prosperity to Lesotho. This type was struck for the kingdom of Lesotho 1979-81, 1985 and 1989. After Moshoeshoe's ouster in 1990, his portrait was dropped and the national arms substituted (KM 55). The plural of sente is lisente. The plural of loti is maloti.

Recorded Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.5 g, nickel-brass, 19.5 mm diameter.
