Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 3253

This specimen was lot 3253 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $95. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 1/2 Real, 1808-PTSPJ. NGC MS-62. Obverse legend 'CAROLUS.IIII'. Deeply toned with lustrous surfaces." This is an example of a type struck 1791-1809 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1814 by the bust of Ferdinand VII. Harris notes that Potosi one reales of Charles IV are tied with Mexico City as the commonest mint. Assayer PJ is recorded for 1803-25. An 1808/7 overdate is noted.

Recorded mintage: 239,000.

Specification: 1.69 g, .896 fine silver, .048 troy oz ASW.
