Aureo sale 243, lot 807

This specimen was lot 807 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 2,200 € (about US$3,324 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"1801. Carlos IV. México. FM. 8 escudos. Bellísima. Brillo original. Muy rara así. EBC+. (eight escudos of 1801, Mexico mint. Very nice, orignal luster, rare thus, choice extremely fine.)"

It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. The date is common, assayer FM is recorded for 1784-1801. Assayer FT also appears for 1801; neither is awarded a premium.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold; this specimen: 27.01 grams.
