The first specimen was lot 3714 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $107.10. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL: Republic, 1000 reis, 1932, 400th Anniversary of Colonialization, attractive color, NGC graded MS65." This is one of a series of circulating commemoratives issued in the 1920's and 1930's which today form an interesting but inexpensive set. This particular one commemorates the 400th anniversary of the colonization of Brazil. There are 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 2000 réis (KM 528 thru KM 532) issued for the same occasion. The 1000 réis gradually shrank (KM 507, KM 510, KM 513, KM 522, KM 525, KM 534, KM 541, KM 550) until its abolition in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year.
Recorded mintage: 56,000.
Specification: 7 g, aluminum bronze, 32 mm diameter.
