This date, one of a series struck 1853-89, is among the moderately priced gold coins of the Empire of Brazil. This specimen was lot 23127 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 10000 Reis 1887, AU55 NGC. Electric tone adorns the obverse legends with remnants of original luster remaining on both sides. A much better date and deserving of specialists' attention."
Recorded mintage: 1,180.
Specification: 8.96 g, 0.917 fine gold, .264 troy oz.
