France SB118-20215r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20215 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1724-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC MS-62. A "louis d'or Mirliton avec grandes palmes" struck at Rouen during the John Law period. Listed as "R3" in Gadoury. Shimmering luster and fully struck, held back by numerous tiny planchet imperfections both sides." This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck in France in 1723, and was replaced by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck in large quantities 1726-40.

Reported Mintage: est. 262,400, a common date for the type.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Fr-459; KM-470.2; Gad-339, Dr/4 № 799, Dr/2 № 538.
