Sincona sale 76, lot 1388

This specimen was lot 1388 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$3,884 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Erzherzog Maximilian III. 1585-1618, ab 1590 Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens. Taler o. J. (1604 oder 1606), Hall. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS62. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Maximilian III, 1585-1618, since 1590 grandmaster of the Teutonic Order. Undated thaler, Hall mint. Very rare in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina.)"

Archduke Maximilian III (1558-1618) was never emperor but was briefly a pretender to the throne of Poland. This type was struck again in 1615 with a distinctly older bust; that date is quite common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.66 g.

Catalog reference: KM, Moser/Tursky 365. Dav-3315.
