from Heritage sale 3049, lot 31282
Peru H3049-31283r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31283 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1843 CUZCO-A AU58 NGC, Cuzco mint. Premium for the type with shimmering prooflike fields and captivating reddish-orange tone that highlights the raised surfaces. Perhaps most notable however is the combination of strike and surface quality, the combination of the two rarely seen this choice. Although struck slightly off-center, the design is as firmly imparted as we've seen on this notoriously incomplete type. On top of that, no significant marks or planchet issues are observed. All considered, one of the finest survivors of the date and perfect for the collector searching out a superbly detailed example of the design." This type was struck at Cuzco 1826-45 and at Lima 1826-40 and 1850-55. This is one of the more available dates.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Fr-63; KM 148.3.
