This coin was minted in Cuzco, Peru, in 1840. This specimen was lot 3561 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "1840 A 1 escudo. Cuzco mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous yellow gold with orange highlights, some natural granularity at rims. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck at Cuzco 1826, 1830, 1840 and 1845-46 and at Lima 1826-29, 1833, 1850 and 1855. It is much scarcer than the prices in the SCWC would indicate.
