Künker sale 354, lot 6609

This specimen was lot 6609 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,567 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WEIMARER REPUBLIK. 2 Reichspfennig 1923, F. Fehlprägung infolge falscher Stempelkoppelung. In US-Plastikholder der PCGS mit der Bewertung PR 65 RB (27258949). Von größter Seltenheit. Polierte Platte. (Germany, Weimar Republic, two pfennig of 1923, muled dies. Graded PCGS PR-65RB. Extremely rare, proof.)"

The regular two reichspfennig was struck with this design 1924-25 and 1936 and is common. It seems the Stuttgart mint muled a 2 reichspfenning obverse with a leftover 2 rentenpfennig reverse die from 1923 to create this error. As a proof, it is difficult to believe that it was inadvertent. Another mule error occurred at Stuttgart in 1929 with the one pfennig.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a very scarce date.

Specification: 3.34 g, bronze, 20 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 38, J. 314 Anm.
