from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72299
Schleswig SB517-72299r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72299 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein. 2-1/2 Schilling (1/24) Specie Daler, 1787-MF. Christian VII (Of Denmark) (1766-1808). NGC MS-65. Good strike with soft satin luster. An attractive gem." This type was struck 1787, 1796, 1799 and 1800 and is common. It was struck by the king of Denmark in his capacity as duke of Schleswig-Holstein. The initials MF stood for Michael Flor, mintmaster at Altona 1787-1818. Schleswig was Danish-speaking while Holstein was German; the conflicts arising therefrom led to the whole region being conquered and annexed by Prussia in the 1860's.

Recorded mintage: 4,800,000.

Specification: 2.08 g, .375 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-124.
