Steve Album sale 51, lot 2996

This specimen was lot 2996 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN: Christian VII, 1784-1808, AE dreiling, Altona, 1787, much mint red color, very nice grade for the one-year type, PCGS graded MS63 RB." One specie daler was 240 dreiling. It seems unlikely that this one year type was all struck in 1787. Christian VII was insane for most of his reign and the government was in the hands of regents, including his stepmother and later his son. The court was the scene of violent power struggles over who would have access to the incapable king. Schleswig was Danish-speaking while Holstein was German; the conflicts arising therefrom led to the whole region being conquered and annexed by Prussia in the 1860's.

Recorded mintage: 2,400,000.

Specifications: 5.80 g, copper, 24.8 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-116, Cr-1.
