Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1106

Holstein in 1648

The first specimen was lot 23094 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Rare Danish Ducat with a German Connection, DENMARK. Ducat, 1680. Gluckstadt Mint. Christian V. NGC AU Details--Bent. Struck for Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Obverse: Laureate, draped, and armored bust right, wearing Order of the White Elephant; Reverse: Crowned monogram triformis. Despite the noted minor flan bend, this RARE and seldom encountered type was issued in Germany for the King's holdings in the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein. Some light wear is observed upon the higher points, with some deeper burnished toning near portions of the peripheries."

The second specimen was lot 1106 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €11,400 (about US$12,634 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Radiantly Lustrous Ducat from Christian V, DENMARK. Ducat, 1680. Gluckstadt Mint. Christian V. NGC MS-62. Mintmaster: Christopher Woltereck (CW). A wonderfully preserved Mint State example on which a few hairlines in the obverse field are visible only because of the abounding luster. The type as such is excessively rare and this variant is in fact UNIQUE with no examples known in public collections. Across the series of Ducats struck at Glückstadt between 1672 and 1685, the portraits of Christian V are numerous, with varying degrees of true likeness. It therefore seems likely that a number of different (unnamed) engravers and goldsmiths were employed when required by a given demand for gold. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)."

Gluckstadt, a town on the Elbe downstream of the city of Hamburg, was founded in 1617 by the kings of Denmark and later made the capital of the duchy of Holstein, which they ruled. A two and four mark accompanies this issue, which was struck again in 1685.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.979 fine gold. The first specimen is 3.42 g, the second specimen 3.45 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-141; KM-70.1; Hede-117; Sieg-144.4; Schou-2; Aagaard-7.1, Bruun-6911.
