Sincona sale 57, lot 3246

The first specimen was lot 1623 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €180 (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 1/4 Reichstaler 1742, Hall. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia of Austria, 1740-80, quarter thaler of 1742, Hall mint. Beautiful patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 3246 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$143 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 1/4 Taler 1742, Hall. Vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, quarter thaler of 1742, Hall mint. Extremely fine.)"

This type of 1740-45 is the last issue of this denomination at this weight standard. After this, the thaler was reduced from 28.82 g, 0.875 fine silver to 28.06 silver, 0.833 fine silver. In the opening years of Maria Theresia's reign, she was fighting Frederick the Great's conquest of Silesia and revolt in Hungary.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.20 g, 0.875 fine silver, the second specimen 7.26 g.

Catalog reference: Moser/Tursky 919. Herinek 744, Eypeltauer 17; M./T. 919, KM 1695.
