Sincona sale 6, lot 563

This specimen was lot 563 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Bayern, Herzogtum, Albrecht V. 1550-1579. Halber Guldentaler 1563. Wappen umgeben von der Vliesordenskette, darüber die Jahreszahl. Rv. Gekrönter, nimbierter Doppeladler mit Reichsapfel auf der Brust. Sehr schön-fast sehr schön. (Duchy of Bavaria, Albrecht V, 1550-79, half guldenthaler of 1563. Obverse: Bavarian arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: crowned, nimbate double-headed eagle with imperial orb on the breast; very fine.)"

This is the period when the gulden, fixed at sixty kreuzer, diverged from the thaler, worth 72 kreuzer. The thaler would be raised to ninety kreuzer after the Thirty Years War.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver; this specimen is 11,97 g.

Catalog reference: Witt. 464. Hahn 44.
