Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 163

This specimen was lot 163 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $1,725.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosí, Bolivia, cob 4 reales, 1620T, Grade 1. Bold full cross and shield (the latter slightly doubled), full P+T, bold 2 (z) of date with clear left side of final digit 0 (not mentioned on certificate), no corrosion, minor edge-crack. Pedigreed to the Classics collection, with Fisher tag and certificate #200387. Recovered from Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida." This type was struck 1605-21, throughout the reign of Philip III. Dates were added in 1617; even so, many are so crudely made that the dates are not legible.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.24 g.

Catalog reference: S-P21; KM-9; CT-248, Cayón-unlisted.
