Steve Album sale 27, lot 1604
Sweden Alb27-1604r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1604 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN: Charles XII, 1697-1718, AE daler, 1718. Emergency issue, IUPITER variety, red and brown, Choice About Unc. Baron de Gortz, the Swedish finance minister, flooded the economy with these copper pieces, which created inflation and chaos. He was eventually beheaded for his actions." This copper daler was struck in Sweden in the closing stages of the Great Northern War when Sweden was losing and the government bankrupt. This series (the SCWC lists ten types issued 1715-19) was supposed to be redeemed in silver after the peace. When this didn't happen, the government official responsible for their issue was executed. Jupiter, the king of the gods, poses here to stir up patriotic fervor in a war-weary populace.

Recorded mintage: 300,000.

Specification: 4.5 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-357.
