This specimen was lot 30192 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $11,400. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Spanish Netherlands. Substantial 1640 4 Ducaton. Brabant. Philip IV 4 Ducaton 1640 AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC, Antwerp mint. A monumental offering from the Spanish Netherlands series and one of only a handful for this entire denomination to come to market in recent decades. Boasting an impressive level of preservation despite its conditional qualifier, that offers commendable visual appeal for the grade designation - a consequence of balanced circulation wear that leaves a uniform expression of struck detail, embellished by traces of residual mint luster and originality. These multiple Ducatons are among the most sought-after silver pieces of this tumultuous era and are commonly witnessed in similar states, a likely result of having been mounted as a confirmation of importance of these substantial issues. NGC has only handled four such examples of this denomination, and based on a quick survey of auction records, is undoubtedly one of the finest currently available to collectors."
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1636-65. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4446) and Tournai (Dav-4450). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. This specimen is rare because it is a quadruple piefort.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 129.92 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen is 129.81 g.
