This specimen was lot 20218 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1786-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. NGC EF-45. A very boldly struck coin that faces up rather well with perfect centering, light even wear and moderate gray and purple toning that traverses both sides. Upon magnified inspection, a small amount of residue on Charles III's cheek and some intentional circular handling in the right obverse field are observed, but both occurrences have only trivial influence on the in-hand appearance. A RARE to VERY RARE date, this piece is the finest of two certified, with the other piece receiving an EF - Details grade at NGC. From the Santa Fe Collection. Ex. Garcia Collection (Chile)." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1773-89, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles III are almost as scarce as pillar dollars from that mint.
Recorded mintage: 149,000.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.
