Aureo sale 242, lot 330

The specimen shown was lot 330 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 110 € (about US$171 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

Isabel II (1833-1868). 1846. Jubia. 4 maravedís. Bella. Escasa y más así. EBC+/S/C-. (Spain, Isabel II, 1833-68, four maravedis of 1846, Jubia mint. Handsome, choice extremely fine.)

The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This four maravedis was worth 2/17 of a real; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Jubia, Segovia and Barcelona 1837-50 and was accompanied by copper one, two and eight maravedis. The type is not scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: copper, 6.05 g, 22.0-24.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16644, KM 530.2, Cal. 516.
