from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 40032
Colombia SB818-40032r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40032 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1781-SF Escudo. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). Lustrous light yellow gold with a smattering of light lines and scrapes. Frosty and very well detailed. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." This type was struck at Popayan and Nuevo Reino 1772-84 and was superseded by a type which, though identical to the naked eye, was only 0.875 fine.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.901 fine gold, .098 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12314, Restrepo 54.21, KM 48.2, Fr-42.
