This type was struck 1751-60 for king Ferdinand VI. There is one reported variety for the year, that of a 1759/7 overdate. The example shown here is an unreported variety, in which the mintmark is not dotted. Gilboy[1] considers the normal, dotted variety to be scarce. As a class, pillar coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, though it is more available than the remaining mints.
Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine silver, .100 troy oz ASW.
