This specimen was lot 22643 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $540.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. Cent, 1883. NGC PROOF-63 RB. Well struck with minor spotting on the obverse. Overall good eye appeal." This one cent piece was struck for Mauritius in 1877-97 and is the first coin of that denomination issued for that island along with an accompanying ten, twenty, two and five cent pieces. Its price ascends rapidly with grade. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
Recorded mintage: 500,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 1.85 g, bronze, 18 mm diameter, plain edge.
