Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71368

This specimen was lot 71368 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. Cent, 1884. Victoria. NGC MS-62 Brown. Intricately detailed with instances of flashy mint red color around the outer designs." This one cent piece was struck for Mauritius in 1877-97 and is the first coin of that denomination issued for that island along with an accompanying ten, twenty, two and five cent pieces. Its price ascends rapidly with grade. The island remained under British rule until 1968.

Recorded mintage: 500,000 plus proofs.
