This specimen was part of lot 42497 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), which sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. Trio of Bronze Denominations (3 Pieces), 1888. London Mint. Victoria. All PCGS Certified. A shimmering matched set of bronze issues, all retaining nearly full mint red. The 5 Cents is particularly difficult in this near-Gem state. 1) 5 Cents, 1888. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. KM-9. 2) 2 Cents, 1888. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. 3) Cent, 1888. PCGS MS-65 Red Brown. From the Richard Margolis Collection. Ex: Prince Collection." This two cent piece was struck for Mauritius in 1877-78, 1882-84, 1888-90, 1896-97 and is the first coin of that denomination issued for that island along with an accompanying ten, twenty, two and five cent pieces. This is a fairly common date; no proofs are recorded. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
