This specimen was lot 22644 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 5 Cents, 1888. PCGS MS-63 BN Secure Holder. Mauritius on Reverse Legend. Sharply struck with a nice even brown patina." This five cent piece was struck for Mauritius in 1877-97 and is the first coin of that denomination issued for that island along with an accompanying ten, twenty, two and one cent pieces. Its price ascends rapidly with grade. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
