Mauritius 1882-H 5 cents
This specimen was lot 31247 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Colony. Victoria Specimen 5 Cents 1882-H SP64 Red NGC, Heaton mint. The only NGC certified 'Red' specimen of this date, the surfaces crackling with a striking luster so often lost on these bronze coins. Seldom offered as a Specimen striking, this example boasts almost-pristine fields and razor-sharp detail, a thus desirable offering from this small British colony." This five cent piece was struck for Mauritius in 1877-97 and is the first coin of that denomination issued for that island along with an accompanying ten, twenty, two and one cent pieces. Its price ascends rapidly with grade. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
