This specimen was lot 2687 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$716 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Osterreich, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Doppelgulden 1866 A. Wien. Vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, double gulden of 1866, Vienna mint. Extremely fine.)"
When Bismarck kicked Austria out of Germany after the war of 1866, German and Austrian coins began to diverge. The thaler was abandoned in 1872 for the florin, which in turn was superseded by the corona in 1892. This type of double florin was struck 1866 only. This date is quite scarce, especially compared to Dav-27 of 1872-92.
Recorded mintage: 74,635.
Specification: 24.69 g, 0.900 fine silver, 36 mm diameter, this specimen 24.65 g.
Catalog reference: KM 2231, Herinek 35, Veselý 58, Jaeckel 336, Dav-25.
